In 1978 she became the first American-born queen of an Arab country when she married His Majesty King Hussein of Jordan. For the last three decades, she has been a world-famous advocate of cross-cultural dialogue and global peace. In this interview with María Hinojosa, Her Majesty Queen Noor talks about her late husband’s efforts to maintain peace in the Middle East, how she balanced tradition with her role as a contemporary queen, and her initiative Global Zero, launched in 2008 to eliminate nuclear weapons worldwide.

"Getting ready to interview Her Majesty was one of the few times that I felt just a bit nervous. I had never interviewed official royalty on Maria Hinojosa: One-on-One and of course the first thing that comes to mind is protocol. One never touches royalty unless they extend a hand. Queen Noor more than extended a hand. She was gracious and engaging with everyone in the studio. She is not a fast speaker--thoughtful and smart is more her style. It was an honest and revealing conversation. When she said a final good bye from a far, I threw her a pretend hug. She turned around and came back to give me one for real. Such is the touch of Her Majesty."

Grammy-Award pianist Danilo Perez

Grammy Award-winning pianist Danilo Perez is considered one of the most dynamic and influential jazz musicians of our time. His career spans more than two decades, a journey that took him from his native Panama to stages all over the world.

Perez has played with some of jazz’s greatest musicians, including Dizzy Gillespie, Wayne Shorter, Herbie Hancock and Paquito D’Rivera. Perez is the founder and artistic director of Berklee College of Music's Global Jazz Institute and the annual Panama Jazz Festival, now in its seventh year. In this interview with María Hinojosa, Perez talks about what he learned from Dizzy Gillespie, his creative process and the future of jazz.

Franklin Chang Diaz

Franklin Chang-Díaz is a former NASA astronaut and the current chairman and CEO of Ad Astra Rocket Company. Chang has recently been in the headlines for his creation VASIMR, a new space propulsion system that is now entering its commercial phase. Born in Costa Rica, he moved to the United States to pursue his dream of becoming an astronaut. Along the way to achieving that goal, Chang-Díaz earned a B.S. in mechanical engineering from the University of Connecticut, and a Sc.D. in plasma physics from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. As an astronaut, he's flown on seven spaceflights—tying the record for most flights with Jerry L. Ross—and spent an impressive 1,601 hours away from Earth. For his work, Chang-Díaz has received many honors in his adopted land, the United States, and his motherland, Costa Rica. In this interview with María Hinojosa he talks about life in other planets, breaking barriers, and helping others to reach for the stars.

Raised in a middle class family, Castro went to Stanford and Harvard. He is at the forefront of an emerging new generation of Latino leaders. Some believe he’s a rising star that could end as the first Latino president of the United States. In this interview with Maria Hinojosa, Mayor Castro talks about his family, the crucial importance of educating Latino youths, and if he sees himself in the White House someday.

Legendary Activist Dolores Huerta

Legendary activist Dolores Huerta co-founded the United Farm Workers of America with César Chávez. She organized the infamous grape boycotts of the 1960s and ‘70s. A committed feminist at age 80, she spent two years traveling the country, urging Latinas to run for office. She has received nine honorary doctorates, been arrested twenty times, and raised eleven children. She tells María Hinojosa what has driven her unwavering activism for the past forty years.

Kevin Bales - Free the Slaves

Kevin Bales is one of the world's leading experts on modern-day slavery. He has determined that approximately 27 million people are enslaved worldwide. Although most of these slaves are in Africa and Asia, there are over 40,000 slaves living among us here in the United States.

Bales is the author of The Slave Next Door and Disposable People: New Slavery in the Global Economy, which has been translated into 10 languages. He is also the co-founder of the abolitionist group Free the Slaves, a nonprofit organization incorporated in 2000 with the primary objective of ending slavery worldwide. In this One-on-One conversation, Bales discusses the realities of contemporary enslavement, the motivation behind his work, and how our generation can bring slavery to an end.

Robert Cox - The Hero of Argentine Journalism

Award-winning journalist Robert Cox is called the hero of Argentine journalism. As the editor of the Buenos Aires Herald during the Dirty War of the 1970’s and 80’s, he risked his life to report kidnappings, torture and murder of thousands of Argentines by the military government. For his courage, Cox was awarded the Maria Moors Cabot Medal from Columbia University and was appointed Officer of the Order of the British Empire for services of international journalism. In this interview with Maria Hinojosa, Cox reflects about the Dirty War, his work as journalist during that period, and reconciliation in Argentina.

Wes Studi - The Actor

Franklin Chang-Diaz, NASA's first Latino astronaut, reflects on the significance of April 12th. The Era of human spaceflight began on April 12th, 1961 when Russian Cosmonaut Yuri Gagarian became the first man to orbit the earth. Twenty years later, on April 12th, 1981, NASA sent the first Space Shuttle to orbit.

Chang Diaz is a veteran of seven space flights, STS 61-C (1986), STS-34 (1989), STS-46 (1992), STS-60 (1994), STS-75 (1996), STS-91 (1998) and STS-111 (2002), he has logged over 1,601 hours in space, including 19 hours and 31 minutes in three spacewalks.

After her convoy was ambushed while on patrol in Iraq in March 2003, Shoshana Johnson became the United States’ first black female prisoner of war. She was held hostage in Iraq for 22 days after being captured with Jessica Lynch and other members of the 507th Maintenance Company. She survived the ordeal despite having suffered bullet wounds to both of her ankles.

Shoshana shared her dramatic story in her 2010 autobiography I’m Still Standing: From Captive U.S. Soldier to Free Citizen – My Journey Home. In this conversation with María Hinojosa, she relives this military ordeal that changed her life forever, as well as discusses the role of women in combat and the stigma related to psychological injuries.
